EXPENSIVE CROSSWALKS

It appears that the $80,000.00 crosswalks that North Perth installed in Listowel have done nothing to make crossing the street in Listowel any easier. Mayor Hollinger is receiving many complaints and feels that nothing else can be done to make crossing the road any safer. He feels that it is up to the pedestrians and drivers to be more responsible for solving the problem, because the police and by-law officer are just to busy. Last I checked, the crosswalks with the long lasting paint job and the expensive emblem are in need of some repair and are starting to look pretty shabby. The paint is starting to peel and are dirty looking. You would think that for the amount of money that was spent it should have lasted longer or worked.... or was the crosswalk really necessary in the first past and just a waste of money

Not to nitpick too much here but in any city crossing the street is a life and death scenario, have you ever tried to cross hespeler Road here in Cambridge? You take your life in your own hands everytime. The problem is that motorists don't care about the pedestrian. As for painting them, normal wear and tare makes them face easier that before, but that i think can be attributed to the fact that they don't use lead based paints anymore, i mean that paint was not good for us but lasted a lifetime!!!

I do remember having to cross Hespeler road back in the day. It is a major highway. This crosswalk is a 2 lane road in the downtown section of town. The crosswalks were a total waste of money. They are embossed, multi coloured with a custom made emblem in the centre. The paint was to last 10 years not 2 and the intersection was narrowed and they forgot about snow removal when they did it. It was not well received by the taxpayers but was done anyway. Same as most projects here

Chatted up the people installing these pedestrian walks at New Orleans Pizza. The Supervisor told me they offered these walks for no additional charge but removal of them would cost upwards of $80,000. He said more $ was to be made with their removal than in their installation. No wonder they were chuckling and rubbing their hands with glee!
