WELCOME TO THE NORTH PERTH ADVOCATE

Welcome to the North Perth Advocate.
My name is Sherrie McTaggart and for the last few years I have be forced to learn a lot about Municipal Government. Some of it has been good but some of it is not. I hope with this blog to not only help fellow taxpayers through the beauracy but to also bring to light some of things about Municipal Government that need to be changed. I also want to have an open forum on many issues and welcome all opinions, but I will be holding all comments and opinions to a very strict code of conduct and will not tolerate the misuse of this blog. This is not meant to make personal attacks on people, it is to bring the issues out and have an open honest discussion about the issues. I thank all who pushed me to do this and they know who they are and I look forward to your wonderful insight here. I look forward to this and a very Happy Mothers Day to all. It takes but one voice..................

Thank you Sherrie for taking the time to create this blog. I agree with your approach and don't think personal attacks are productive or solve conflict.

Personally, I believe the problem lies in a lack of communication and education.

I agree with you - people need a place to go for help and ideas and this blog could serve as a resource for learning for not only the general public but also business, elected officials and staff.

Democracy and our constitution provide us with the ability to speak openly (with respect) as well as the right to agree, disagree or remain neutral without reprisal.

I look forward to other people's comments and hopefully we will see a progreesive discussion on the issues facing local and regional government.

agm Overall my experiences with muniucipal government have left me very disappointed. Too often have I seen our local municipal government (Woolwich Township) make decisions that clearly bear no relation whatsoever to presentations by citizens or to reports that have been available prior to the meetings. It has been made abundantly clear that the real decisions are made privately and Council Meetings are essentially "dog and pony shows" put on to give the appearance of democracy at work. I'm afraid that almost all good ideas, rules and procedures can be bent and manipulated by those more intent on benefiting themselves and their "friends" than looking out for the public interest. This is politics and it includes local government.

It's interesting how people change when they are elected or go to work for local government. What happens? Before elected, they have great ideas and seem really passionate about making a difference but when they get in, they seem unable to make the kind of changes/commitments they ran on or stood for. It's almost like there is something or someone holding them back. Or, do they find out when they get there that the rules are different and we're the last to know...

Great job Sherie.. You know I am running like crazy with my day job and the Cambridge Advocate.. but I am so happy to see you do this. We need more people on board taking a stand and demanding accountibility of our elected officals.. Keep up the good work..
